This month is National Wellness Month, and at the heart of everything we do, we aim to promote healthy lifestyles for our service users. With the different levels of care we provide for our clients, we understand that a healthy lifestyle goes beyond healthy eating and exercise. Promoting wellness includes focusing on different aspects of your health, such as your physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual health, and as a domiciliary care company who promotes person-centred care plans, we know this all too well. So, how do we promote healthy lifestyles at MerseyCare Julie Ann? Let’s look at the services we offer, and how they help our service users maintain their wellness.

Companionship

One service we offer at MCJA is companionship. What is companionship? This is the act of providing friendship and company; often, this is all that our service users may need! When you live on your own, or have little close friends or family members, companionship is one of the most important services that we provide for our clients. It provides our service users with emotional and social support that they need, that they aren’t receiving elsewhere. Something as simple as sitting down and having a 15-minute chat over a tea or coffee can help promote healthy emotional and social wellbeing for our clients. Companionship also includes;
  • Running errands
  • Playing social games
  • Walking the dog together
  • Accompanying on travels/days out
  • Going to theatres, cinema or social clubs.

Personal Care

Often the most difficult service to accept, personal care can help our client’s support their physical wellness in many ways. From showering/bathing, to applying topical medication, personal care is one of the most important services that we offer for clients who aren’t very independent, and can not maintain their personal care themselves. Personal care and support with showering/bathing can also help reduce the risk of skin conditions and skin irritation, which may negatively impact the client’s overall wellbeing, leading to further health problems. As we know this can be difficult to accept, we provide this service with the upmost respect to maintain our client’s dignity.

Meal preparation

Another service we offer is meal preparation – this includes preparing and cooking meals for our clients, ensuring they maintain a healthy diet. This ensures that the service user is consuming the right nutrients and the right vitamins to support their overall wellbeing. This also includes ensuring the client is hydrated at all times through providing drinks such as water, tea or coffee, which is extremely important for overall wellness.

Reablement services

Another service that we provide is reablement services (also known as aftercare or intermediate care), which includes supporting our client’s overall health until they are ready to become fully independent in their own home, reducing the need for long-term support. Often, this is provided when a service user is moved back into their home after a long period of time in hospital, or a period of illness. This includes providing holistic services to our clients, to regain their skills and confidence, and is only provided for a short amount of time. Examples of reablement services include relearning:
  • How to cook
  • Washing
  • Cleaning
  • Walking
Whilst our Care Assistants will help support you and provide reablement services, you may also receive the same services from a group of healthcare professionals according to your care plan.
