how did they begin?

Initially the RVS began as the WVS (Women’s Voluntary Service) in 1938 by Stella Isaacs as a Women’s organisation to provide further support in preparation of World War 2. During the War, they were accredited with evacuating 1.5 million children out of the cities, locating safe areas and running clothes collections for those in need. In 1952, Queen Elizabeth became a patron giving them the title of the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service. As rationing continued following the War, the charity continued by delivering ‘meals on wheels’ to those who were housebound or otherwise struggling.
