Private Care

With private care, you arrange support directly with a care provider such as MerseyCare Julie Ann, without going through the local council.

  • No Assessment Needed to Start: You can contact a care provider directly to arrange care at a time and pace that suits you.
  • Choice and Flexibility: You have full control over who provides your care, when visits take place, and what type of support is included.
  • Speed: You can usually start care more quickly, as there’s no waiting for council assessments or approvals.
  • Cost: You’ll pay for your care privately, but you may still be eligible for certain benefits or allowances to help with costs.

Local Authority Care

If you contact your local council’s adult social care team, they’ll arrange an assessment to understand what help is needed and what kind of support you’re eligible for:

  • Assessment: A social worker or care assessor will visit you at home to discuss your needs, daily routines, and what support would help most.
  • Funding: The council will look at your income and savings to decide if they can contribute towards the cost of your care. Some people get full or partial funding; others may need to pay for all of their care themselves.
  • Arranging Care: If you qualify for support, the local authority can arrange a care provider on your behalf, or give you a personal budget so you can choose your own provider.
  • Flexibility: This option can be helpful if you’re unsure where to start or need help managing costs, but the care options may be more limited to providers approved by your local council.
