Understanding Care Choices

Understanding care and choosing the right type can feel overwhelming especially if it’s your first time exploring support options for yourself or a loved one.

At MerseyCare Julie Ann, we’re here to make it simple.

Explaining Different Care Choices

There are a few main ways to receive care and support, depending on your needs and how independently you want to live.

MerseyCare Julie Ann only provide domiciliary care, offering different levels of help and flexibility. While we don’t operate extra care schemes or care homes, we’ll explain how they fit into the wider picture so you can understand all your options.

Domiciliary Care (Care At Home)

Domiciliary care means receiving care and support in your own home. It’s ideal for people who want to stay where they’re comfortable but need some help with everyday tasks.

How it works:

  • You remain living in your own home.
  •  A Care Assistant visits at agreed times — this might be once or several times a day.
  • Support can include help with washing, dressing, preparing meals, taking medication, or simply providing companionship.
  • You decide how much help you need, and it can increase or decrease over time.

Extra Care Housing (Extra Care Schemes)

An Extra Care Scheme offers the best of both worlds: independence with support available when you need it. It’s designed for older people or adults with care needs who want to live in their own apartment but with care on site and a friendly community around them.

You live in your own self-contained flat within a purpose-built housing complex but have shared spaces like lounges, gardens and activity rooms that create a welcoming community. Every care plan is personalised; some residents receive regular daily visits, while others just like knowing help is nearby.

Care Homes

Care homes are residential settings for people who need full-time care and supervision, such as those with advanced care needs or health conditions that make it difficult to live independently. Residents move into the care home full-time. Staff are on site 24 hours a day to provide personal care, meals and support. Some care homes also have registered nurses for medical care.

While MerseyCare Julie Ann offer domiciliary care across Liverpool and Widnes, we do not currently have any care homes.
